Year 2

Year 2 key information

Learning and curriculum

Our creative and engaging curriculum hooks the children in; taking them on a journey of new knowledge, discovery and academic excellence! The children travel back in time and find out all about Florence Nightingale and her role in the Crimean War and the Great Fire of London producing some fantastically evocative and gory writing in the process. We follow Read Write Inc Phonics to teach reading and writing.

They also broaden their horizons, developing their knowledge of the wider world as they learn all about Zambia, drawing  comparisons between life around the River Zambezi and life here in Mortlake.

Assessments

This is the year of the Key Stage 1 (KS1) end-of-year statutory attainment tests known as SATS, which help us to ensure our pupils are making the best possible progress. Whilst we encourage and support our children to achieve their very best, they form only a small part of Year 2, and the school approaches them as an opportunity for our children to show off all they have learnt in Key Stage 1, rather than as daunting formal examinations.

The children will complete the following tests in a classroom setting:

  • Reading
  • Maths (Arithmetic and Reasoning)
  • Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation.

There is a short video below about the KS1 tests here:
