Habitats and Heritage workshop – Burton – Exploring without Boundaries
Year 5 have taken part in two pilot workshops with Habitats and Heritage – the charity that cares for the natural and historic environment and climate in south and west London
Using the spectacular, local mausoleum of the famous Victorian explorers, Sir Richard Francis Burton and his wife, Lady Isabel Burton, in St Mary Magdalen church’s graveyard, Habitats and Heritage offer free workshops and lessons for Secondary and Primary school students. This is a brilliant way to get students engaging with a stunning piece of local history on their doorstep and using it to explore a host of intriguing themes including Victorian Exploration and Islam and the Haji.
In our first workshop we learnt about Victorian Explorers and then went to observe the memorial in the churchyard ourselves. In our second workshop, we constructed our own memorials with symbols relevant to us, such as this memorial to our pets.
