Year 4

Year 4 key information

Learning and curriculum

Alongside our daily maths and English lessons, our Year 4 pupils study a range of exciting topics in the foundation subjects throughout the year. Whether they are learning about The Romans, Anglo Saxons, Vikings or rivers, rainforests and South America, we continue to ensure that our children have the opportunity to enrich their learning through practical activities and experiences such as workshops provided by our local Museum of Richmond.

With their growing maturity, our Year 4 pupils are able to reflect on their own learning and what works best for them. Through lessons and our classroom culture, children develop increasing independence and confidence in what they can achieve at school. It is wonderful to see this in action as the children lead our Christmas Carol Service, a real highlight of our school year.

Assessments

Formative assessments are made throughout the year and summative assessments are completed  at the end of each term or topic. This information is shared with parents by your child’s teacher and their progress and targets are discussed at our October and February Parents’ evenings. You will also receive a written report detailing their end of year outcomes in July.

Year 4 pupils also complete a Multiplication Tables Test in June. This is an online statutory test which aims to ensure pupils have a fluent grasp of multiplication and division facts in order to be proficient mathematicians. Pupils are asked to answer 25 questions on times tables from two to twelve. They are given six seconds per question, with three seconds rest between each question, so the test should last less than five minutes. The children will have already been practising times tables for several years, including using online games, so the test is not stressful and is merely an opportunity for them to show what they can do.

Year 4 Teacher

“I like school because I get to play with the friends I have made and learn about different subjects. It’s the best school in the world because the teachers are kind, loving and caring.”
